(4.02.09) Global Warming- Was it ever really a crisis?
The Heartland Institute-“The second International Conference on Climate Change concluded its 2-1/2 -day run March 10, 2009 in New York City after confronting the theme “Global warming: Was it ever really a crisis?”

The answer was a resounding “No.”

More than 75 papers and keynote addresses were presented by some of the world’s leading climatologists, economists, policy makers, and opinion leaders.”

(4.02.09) The Faulty Logic of Public Financing
The public financing of elections is all the rage in Raleigh. North Carolina already has two such programs — the Public Campaign Fund for candidates in top judicial races and the Voter-Owned Elections Fund for candidates in three Council of State races.

Now come additional efforts. Of particular note is Gov. Beverly Perdue’s endowment that would fund gubernatorial elections. And the House has shown interest in a bill to establish public financing provisions in municipal elections.

Noam Chomsky, the controversial author and linguist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Robert Kagan, a neoconservative commentator, each represent a way to be an “intellectual,” says Pierre Guerlain, a professor of American studies at the University of Paris X-Nanterre. Their opposing schools of thought are not the only ones, he writes, but “they represent two ideal types of the intellectual in society.”

A new classification created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching includes 76 colleges that count community engagement as part of their mission.

(6.07.06) New Web Features for Affiliates
Faculty Affiliates can now access information on LockeFan.org. Affiliates can edit their profiles, add and edit recent scholarship and add events to our calendar.

These new features work best in Mozilla Firefox for Mac users and on any browser for PC users.

(1.20.06) APEE Offers Conference Grants
The Association of Private Enterprise Education is offering grants to young faculty and gradute students to attend its annual conference. The primary purpose of this grant is to bring in new young people to APEE.

(1.05.06) Think Tank Launches Faculty Network
RALEIGH – The state’s largest think tank has launched a major new program, a network of North Carolina faculty and scholars interested in the classical liberal tradition and its rich scholarly history. The John Locke Foundation created the Faculty Affiliate Network to serve as an informal resource for classical liberal scholars for networking, research review and feedback, development, and dialogue among faculty and students.

(12.21.05) Grant Establishes Program in Economics, Political Science at NC State
NCSU – A new $511,500 grant from the John William Pope Foundation will help North Carolina State University’s Department of Economics and Department of Political Science and Public Administration develop programs that explore the relationships between economics and politics in free societies.

(12.21.05) SPEL Students Dig Into Economics, Politics
NCSU – The Society for Politics, Economics and Law (SPEL), a new student organization formed at NC State last fall, is part of a new multidisciplinary program led jointly by faculty in the College of Management and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHASS).
